Common Questions
The quick answers most customers want before reserving. Full buyer's guide on our FAQ page.
How does the final billing work?
Your total cost comes from two separate payments to two separate parties. The ranch charges $4.00 per pound based on live weight, minus your deposit. The butcher, K&S Meats in Victoria, Virginia, charges separately at $0.85 per pound of dressed weight plus a $100 flat fee, paid directly at pickup. A typical whole cow all-in cost is around $5,538, and a typical half cow is around $2,819.
When will I receive my beef after reserving?
Preparation takes approximately 4 weeks from the time your animal is processed. This allows for our signature 14 to 21 day dry-aging process, plus custom butchering and vacuum-sealing to your cut sheet specifications at K&S Meats. We provide an estimated pickup window when you reserve and keep you updated as your order progresses.
Do you ship, or can I get delivery?
Currently, we are pick-up only. You can collect your order at our farm in Amelia Court House, Virginia, or at K&S Meats in Victoria, Virginia. Because our beef is VDACS-inspected for Virginia sale only, we cannot ship or sell across state lines into Washington D.C., Maryland, or other states.
What is the difference between "grass-fed" and "grass-fed and grass-finished"?
Most beef labeled "grass-fed" is actually grain-finished in a feedlot for the last 90 to 150 days of its life, which changes the fat composition and flavor significantly. At Dunn Right Ranch, our cattle are 100% grass-fed AND grass-finished, eating only pasture grass throughout their entire lives. This results in higher concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), and produces a richer, more complex flavor than commercial beef.
How much freezer space do I need?
A half cow share requires 8 to 10 cubic feet of freezer space, which a standard standalone chest or upright freezer handles comfortably. A whole cow share requires 16 to 20 cubic feet, so a dedicated chest freezer is strongly recommended. A 20 cu ft chest freezer costs $300 to $500 at most hardware stores, and pays for itself given the price per pound of Akaushi Wagyu, Angus, and South Poll beef.
Our Herd & Our Land
Three exceptional breeds. Open Virginia pastures.
A commitment to the land that feeds them.
Three Premium Bloodlines
Each breed is hand-selected for a specific quality: extraordinary marbling, proven grass performance, or superior nutritional profile. Together they define the Dunn Right Ranch LLC difference.
Akaushi originates from Japan and is a type of Wagyu, though not all Wagyu are Akaushi. This breed didn't exist outside Japan until the 1990s. Known for its distinctive red coat and extraordinary intramuscular fat distribution, Akaushi delivers marbling, tenderness, and a buttery richness unlike any other beef.
Originating from Scotland and brought to America where it became the most respected beef breed in the country. Black Angus cattle are known for their black coat and consistently high-quality meat — tender, juicy, and flavorful across every cut from ribeye to ground beef.
Developed by Teddy Gentry of the legendary band Alabama. South Polls are small-framed, slick-haired, and bred specifically to excel on grass-based grazing systems. They are calm, fertile, long-lived animals producing lean and tender meat that is higher in Omega-3s and lower in cholesterol.
How Do I Know Which One Is Right for Me?
3 questions. 90 seconds. We'll match you to the breed that fits your table and explain exactly why.
You value the pinnacle of beef genetics. Akaushi Wagyu delivers extraordinary intramuscular fat distribution. The kind of buttery richness and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness that only comes from a breed that didn't exist outside Japan until the 1990s. You're not just buying beef. You're buying the rarest bloodline in Virginia.
You want the beef that built the American West. Black Angus is the most trusted and beloved beef breed in the country for good reason: consistently tender, bold, juicy, and extraordinary across every single cut from ribeye to ground beef. Reliable. Classic. The perfect all-arounder for a busy family that demands quality.
You value health and heritage above all else. South Poll cattle were bred specifically to thrive on 100% grass, making them the most nutritionally efficient breed we raise. Lean, tender, and intensely beefy with the highest Omega-3 content and lowest cholesterol of our three breeds. This is conscious eating at its finest.
Keep in mind your share will include all three breeds. This quiz helps you understand which flavor profile to expect most of.
How We Farm
Grass-fed cattle raised on a diet of fresh pasture grass. No grain, no feed supplements, no shortcuts. We use rotational grazing techniques, moving cattle to a new paddock every few days to let the grass recover and the soil replenish.
Moving the herd regularly prevents overgrazing and soil erosion, keeps the grass healthy, and improves the land season after season.
We plant cover crops to protect and enrich the soil between grazing cycles, building organic matter and reducing runoff.
Our cattle are never confined to feedlots. They graze freely on open Virginia pastures with space to move naturally throughout their lives.
Grass-fed production doesn't require human-produced grain. Our land that isn't suitable for crops sustains our herd, reducing our overall footprint.
Our Antibiotics Policy
We do not use antibiotics unless absolutely necessary and recommended by a practicing veterinarian as a lifesaving intervention. If an animal is treated, it is fully documented and tracked for the remainder of its life on the farm. Transparency is non-negotiable.

Before you reserve, understand exactly how much beef you're getting and how much space you'll need. These are typical figures and exact weights vary by animal.
Beef by Family Size
How long your share lasts depends on how often your family eats beef. Use this as a guide.
| Family Size | Meals / Week | Lbs / Month | Half Beef (250 lbs) | Whole Beef (500 lbs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple 2 people | 2×/week | ~8 lbs | 31 months | 62 months |

| Large Family 6 people | 4×/week | ~45 lbs | 5.5 months | 11 months |
Estimates based on ~1 lb beef per meal. Vacuum-sealed beef stores at peak quality for 12–18 months at 0°F.
How the Final Billing Works
No surprises. Here's exactly how your total cost is calculated: two separate payments to two separate parties.
Frequently Asked Questions
Because reserving an animal means we dedicate that specific animal to your family, turning away other customers and covering the final months of care and feed, deposits are non-refundable.
However, we are your neighbors. If a genuine emergency arises, please call us at 804-586-9321 and we'll do our best to work with you. We are also happy to transfer your reservation to a friend or family member if your circumstances change.
Your total cost comes from two separate payments to two separate parties. The ranch charges $4.00 per pound based on live weight (minus your deposit). The butcher charges separately, $0.85 per pound of dressed weight + $100 flat fee, paid directly at pickup in Victoria, VA.
Whole cow example: ~1,200 lbs live = ~$4,800 to the ranch. Minus your $4,000 deposit, balance due is ~$800. Butcher: ~750 lbs dressed × $0.85 + $100 = ~$738. All-in: ~$5,538.
Half cow example: ~600 lbs live = ~$2,400 to the ranch. Minus your $2,000 deposit, balance due is ~$400. Butcher: ~375 lbs dressed × $0.85 + $100 = ~$419. All-in: ~$2,819.
Final cost depends on actual live weight at processing. The numbers above are typical estimates. You can toggle between whole and half scenarios in the Billing Breakdown section above.
We are proudly 100% pasture-raised without added growth hormones. Our cattle eat only fresh grass and forage throughout their entire lives, never grain-finished in a feedlot.
We are an official Virginia's Finest™ participant, meaning our beef meets the highest quality standards set by the Commonwealth of Virginia for agricultural products.
While we are not USDA Certified Organic (a separate, costly certification process), our practices go beyond most organic requirements: no synthetic hormones, no sub-therapeutic antibiotics, and full transparency on every animal treated.
Most beef labeled 'grass-fed' is actually grain-finished in a feedlot for the last 90 to 150 days of its life, which changes the fat composition and flavor significantly. At Dunn Right Ranch LLC, our cattle are 100% grass-fed AND grass-finished and eat only pasture grass throughout their entire lives.
This results in higher concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin E, and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), and produces a richer, more complex flavor than commercial beef.
Dry-aging is a controlled process where beef hangs in a temperature- and humidity-regulated environment for an extended period after processing. During this time, natural enzymes break down the muscle fibers, resulting in beef that is significantly more tender and develops a deeper, more concentrated flavor than fresh-cut meat.
Most commercially sold beef is wet-aged in a vacuum bag for 7 to 10 days purely for logistical reasons, it's faster and cheaper. Our beef is dry-aged for 14 to 21 days at K&S Meats in Victoria, VA before it's cut and packaged to your specifications. This is one of the reasons your beef takes approximately 4 weeks from processing to pickup, and one of the reasons it tastes the way it does.
VDACS stands for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. All of our beef is processed under VDACS inspection through their Office of Meat and Poultry Services, which ensures our facility and processing meet rigorous state-level safety and quality standards.
VDACS inspection is a state-level certification, equivalent in rigor to USDA inspection for in-state sales, but authorized for sale within the Commonwealth of Virginia only. This means we legally cannot ship beef across state lines or sell into Washington D.C., Maryland, or other states. All orders are pick-up only: at our farm in Amelia Court House, VA or at K&S Meats in Victoria, VA.
As a Virginia's Finest™ participant, our beef also meets the Commonwealth's highest standards for locally produced agricultural products.

Absolutely, and we encourage it. We have nothing to hide. Farm visits are available by appointment Monday through Friday. Call us at 804-586-9321 (6 to 9pm EST) or use our contact form to schedule.
You'll see the pastures, meet the animals, and come away with a much deeper appreciation for what you're investing in. Transparency is one of our core values.
A whole cow share includes every premium cut the animal has to offer: steaks (ribeye, sirloin, T-bone, filet mignon), roasts (chuck, rump, round), ground beef, stew meat, brisket, short ribs, offal (liver, heart, tongue, kidneys, optional), and bones for broth.
A half cow contains all the same categories at approximately half the quantity. You can substitute cuts you don't want for extra ground beef, just discuss it with our butcher at K&S Meats when you submit your cut sheet.
Grass-fed beef is leaner than grain-fed and cooks roughly 30% faster, so a few small adjustments make a big difference. Cook at medium heat rather than high, and pull steaks at 130°F for perfect medium-rare. Rest steaks 5 to 8 minutes before cutting to let juices redistribute.
Always thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Never refreeze previously thawed meat. Let meat reach room temperature 30 minutes before cooking. A small amount of butter or quality oil compensates for the lower fat content. Properly vacuum-sealed and stored at 0°F, your beef maintains peak quality for 12 to 18 months.
